美 애리조나 I-40 대형 추돌 사고…한국인 실종 추정, 추가 유해 발견
미국 애리조나주 윌리엄스(Williams) 인근 고속도로에서 발생한 대형 추돌 사고 현장에서 추가 인체 유해가 발견됐다. 이번 사고는 한국인 실종자와 연관됐을 가능성이 제기돼, 당국이 정밀 감식 작업을 이어가고 있다고 코코니노 카운티 셰리프국이 실종된 한국인 3명에 대한 공식 입장을 발표했다.
애리조나 공공안전국(Arizona Department of Public Safety, AZDPS)과 코코니노 카운티 셰리프국(Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, CCSO)은 현지시각 3월 24일 공동 성명을 통해, 지난 13일 윌리엄스 인근 인터스테이트 40번 고속도로(I-40)에서 발생한 다중 추돌 사고와 관련한 수사 상황을 업데이트했다.
성명에 따르면, 사고 현장에서 회수된 잔해물 속에서 최근 추가적인 인체 유해가 발견됐다. 당국은 이 유해가 사고 당시 실종된 것으로 추정되는 한국인 탑승자들과 관련이 있는지를 확인 중이다.
이번 사고에서는 다수의 차량이 연루됐으며, 그중 한 대는 BMW SUV로 확인됐다. 사고 직후 발생한 대형 화재로 인해 현장은 극심하게 훼손된 상태였다. 당국은 화염의 강도와 지속 시간이 길었던 탓에 유해 식별 작업에 큰 어려움을 겪고 있다고 밝혔다.
현재 유해 감식은 야바파이 카운티 검시소(Yavapai County Medical Examiner’s Office)에서 진행 중이다. 검시 당국은 “심각하게 손상된 유해의 신원을 확인하는 데는 시간이 걸릴 수 있다”며 “정확한 감식을 위해 최대한 정밀하게 작업을 진행하고 있다”고 전했다.
현지 수사 당국은 “가족과 국민들이 겪는 고통과 불안을 잘 알고 있다”며 “비극적인 상황 속에서도 최대한 신속하고 신중하게 진상을 밝히기 위해 총력을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.

Update on Fatal Collision on Interstate 40 in Williams, Arizona
The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) and the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) are providing an update regarding the ongoing investigation into the fatal multi-vehicle collision that occurred on Interstate 40 near Williams, Arizona, on March 13, 2025.
Through continued investigation and collaboration, investigators have confirmed that one of the vehicles involved in the collision was a BMW SUV.
Additionally, as of March 23, 2025, investigators have discovered more human remains within the debris recovered from the crash scene.
All agencies involved are actively working together to determine whether the remains are those of the South Korean nationals believed to have gone missing in the area at the time of the collision.
The intensity and prolonged duration of the fire that ensued during the collision have posed significant challenges for identification efforts. Due to the extent of the damage, the process of identifying the remains requires meticulous examination.
